PNP CITES HEADWAY IN PROBE OF MEDIA SLAY CASES

The Philippine National Police is implementing more tangible actions to fulfill its crucial role in complementing national government efforts to resolve media killings and other threats to press freedom
“The PNP has made significant headway in the investigation of cases of violence committed against working journalists as part of the 4-pronged approach of the Aquino administration to curb media killings,” according to Chief Superintendent Reuben Theodore C Sindac, Chief of the PNP Public Information Office.
Sindac said, mainly thru the efforts of Task Force USIG of the Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management (DIDM), 42 cases investigated by the PNP resulted in the successful prosecution of eight (8) accused responsible in separate cases of media slay.
To complement efforts in enhancing law enforcement capability, strengthening of the judicial system and support for the promotion of media ethics and standards, the PNP is also applying the strong arm approach of accounting for loose firearms and illegal weapons to effectively take away instruments of crime, violence and oppression from the hands of criminal elements and unauthorized individuals.

Alongside this nationwide campaign against loose firearms, the PNP has also intensified the campaign against Wanted Persons and Organized Crime Groups, particularly gun-for-hire syndicates who may also be involved in media killing, Sindac said.
He said, there is no systematic pattern in all this cases investigated by Task Force USIG.
“All incidents are being treated and investigated as separate criminal cases because of the nature of the individual cases where motives such as personal grudge, double-cross, land dispute, and business rivalry often come into play,” Sindac explained (PNP-PIO)
