Roxas orders deployment of more cops in Metro’s ‘problem areas’

MANILA, Philippines–Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II ordered the deployment of additional police forces in eight “problem areas” in Metro Manila with high crime rates.

Roxas in a statement directed National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Chief Police Director General Carmelo Valmoria to order district directors to analyze their data based on the Geographical Information System (GIS) and determine which areas needed additional personnel.

50,000 “FORCE MULTIPLIERS” TO ASSIST IN POLICE SECURITY OPERATIONS FOR UNDAS 2014

The Philippine National Police has mobilized the support of a 50,000-strong augmentation force that will assist in security and public safety operations for the Halloween Holiday.

According to PNP Spokesperson PSSUPT Wilben Mayor, the PNP is enlisting the support of 57,266 “force multipliers” composed of 29,100 Barangay Tanod and Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team (BPAT), 15,229 private security guards, and 12,937 civilian volunteers.

These “force multipliers” will assist PNP personnel in law enforcement and public safety operations in cemeteries and memorial parks; bus terminals; sea ports, airports; major tourist destinations; vital installations; places of worship; and travel routes.

MANILA, Philippines—Hobbled by the lack of manpower, the Philippine National Police is turning to “radiomen” to boost its anticrime campaign in Metro Manila.

Interior Secretary Mar Roxas on Wednesday tapped private radio communication groups as force multipliers for the PNP, even as he cited a slight drop in the number of reported crimes in the capital.

In a meeting with members of various radio groups and senior PNP officials at Camp Crame, Roxas ordered Director Carmelo Valmoria, chief of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), to set up a protocol that would guide members of the radio groups in reporting crimes to the police.

“For a start, we can deploy your members to the 12 places in Metro Manila which are considered to be crime-prone areas,” Roxas told the officials of the radio groups. “You can be the additional eyes and ears of the police versus the criminals (in Metro Manila).”

MANILA, Philippines - The mother of slain Filipino transgender Jennifer Laude is appealing to President Benigno Aquino III for help as their lawyer lambasted the supposedly slow government action on the case.

"Sana kaming mahihirap, 'wag kaming baliwalain. May karapatan din kaming mag-reklamo," Julita Laude said in a televised press conference in Olongapo City on Thursday. "Sana tulungan niya kami. Kasi kung ganoon lang din na walang mangyayari, para lang din kaming itinapon."

VACC files supplemental complaint vs. PNP chief Purisima

The anti-crime group Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) has filed a supplemental complaint with the Office of the Ombudsman against Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Alan Purisima.

In a phone interview with GMA News Online, VACC head Dante Jimenez accused Purisima of submitting "incomplete and untruthful" Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN).
Last September 29, the group filed a plunder complaint against Purisima in connection with his sprawling property in Nueva Ecija and the alleged questionable renovation of the PNP chief's official quarters inside Camp Crame.
Purisima, who faced a Senate investigation last week, denied that he has amassed hidden wealth, linking the accusations against him to unnamed groups and individuals affected by his anti-crime drive.

President Benigno Aquino III had repeatedly vouched for Purisima's honesty as a public official.

‘Ombudsman’s order of suspension, lifestyle check on Purisima inescapable’

MANILA, Philippines—Once the Ombudsman orders either a probe on Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Alan Purisima’s lifestyle or his suspension, he cannot get away from it.

Senior Superintendent Robert Po, ‎the newly-appointed spokesperson of Purisima, said in a Tuesday press briefing‎ when asked if his boss would welcome an investigation on his alleged Nueva Ecija mansion.

Po also said the Office of the O‎mbudsman has started the lifestyle check on Purisima.

“I think that when the Ombudsman says that there has to be an ocular inspection, I can say he can’t do away with that and I think the PNP chief will welcome that especially if it’s coming from the Ombudsman,” he said.

“Just (to) make it a point that what he is saying after all that it is not a mansion will be proven.”

On Monday, Purisima bared his controversial property in San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija to prove to the media and his critics that his 4.7-hectare property was not a “luxurious estate.”

Reports surfaced that representatives from the Ombudsman came with the media in Nueva Ecija to scrutinize Purisima’s ‎property. Military and Other Law Enforcement Officers (MOLEO) agents from the graft-investigating body ‎were said to have led the inspection.

This was neither denied nor confirmed by Po.

But he said: “If experts will come from the Ombudsman, he will abide by that.”

PURISIMA: SMEAR CAMPAIGN MEANT TO BLOCK REFORMS AT PNP

Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Director General Alan La Madrid Purisima told a Senate panel on Tuesday that he had become a target of an organized smear campaign to block the reforms he had put in place within the police force, particularly in fighting corruption in the processing of gun permits.

Appearing before the Senate Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs chaired by Sen. Grace Poe, Purisima said the syndicates operating within the Firearms and Explosives Office (FEO) of the PNP that were stripped of their “businesses” were going after his neck.

Prior to reforms he had instituted, Purisima said the FEO was a corruption-riddled office that allowed the proliferation of fake gun licenses and permit to carry firearms.

MANILA, Philippines–Malacañang on Wednesday came to Director General Alan Purisima’s defense, describing his Senate testimony as “truthful” and saying he still had the “moral ascendancy” over the Philippine National Police despite allegations of corruption.

But Sen. Francis Escudero said there may be more reason to hold Purisima accountable for the big discount he got for the purchase of a sport utility vehicle last year than for the donation from his friends for the renovation of his official residence in Camp Crame.

Consumer and anticrime groups have filed plunder and indirect bribery complaints against Purisima in the Office of the Ombudsman over the renovation of his official residence, dubbed “White House,” and his Nueva Ecija property.

Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said it was up to Purisima to take a leave of absence amid the charges filed against the PNP chief.

Asked if Purisima still had the moral ascendancy over his men, Lacierda replied: “Yes, I believe so.”
