APEC hosting generally peaceful, PNP claims
The Philippine National Police has indicated that the country's hosting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation has been generally peaceful even with the attempts of militant groups to hold protest actions near the APEC venues.
In a press briefing on Thursday, PNP Spokesman Wilben Mayor said they have been exercising extreme patience especially with the protesters conducting rallies.
“Until now wala po kaming ginawang arrest. Policy nga po ng ating Chief PNP na as much as possible well let the protesters to express their sentiments. Mamahayag po, magsalita sila,” he said.
“Hahayaan po ito ng Philippine National Police at Security Task Force but then again ang hiling lang po natin is itigil na po nila ‘yung violence na ginagawa at ginawa nila kaninag umaga,” he added.
Mayor was referring to the protest action at Buendia Avenue where the police force and protesters figured in a street clash.
“As of this moment mayroong nga tayong nakitang nagrarally sa areas na nabanggit kanina. We will implement maximum tolerance,” he said.
“Again we are calling on the leaders to please observe the law. We have been reminding them of the no permit no rally policy,” he added.
Mayor also called on protesters to self-disperse to prevent further altercations and violation of the law.
“Walang permit na binigay ang local government units sa areas kung saan may APEC. So therefore, their presence in that particular area is already unauthorized and in violation of the law,” he said.
