MANILA, Philippines – At least 43 members of the elite Special Action Forces died while 11 were injured in what the Philippine National Police called a “misencounter” of the police with Muslim rebels in Maguindanao province on Sunday.

In a televised press briefing, PNP officer-in-charge Deputy Director Leonardo Espina confirmed the death of 43 of his men after a day-long firefight between policemen and members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters in Barangay (village) Tukalanipao.

The Philippine National Police is now in the process of delivering the sad news to surviving family members of policemen slain in an encounter last Sunday with lawless elements in Maguindanao.

As a policy, the PNP withholds information about circumstances surrounding the death of a PNP member until the orphaned family has been notified.

On Monday, the Philippine Flag was hoisted at half-mast at the PNP National Headquarters in Camp Crame as a sign of mourning over the loss of brothers in uniform.

MANILA, Philippines—While security forces have put their “best foot forward” for the visit of Pope Francis, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said the most crucial part of keeping the pontiff safe was the cooperation of the public.

“Among the most potent forces in securing the Pope is the public,” Deputy Director
General Leonardo Espina, PNP officer-in-charge, said in a recent meeting with the media.

In a statement on Tuesday, the PNP official said the peace and order ‎during the much-anticipated event lay with the people, who might be “inconvenienced” by the security measures of the police.
