AFP ASSURES COOPERATION IN PROBE OF MAMASAPANO INCIDENT
The Board of Inquiry (BOI) looking into the
circumstances surrounding police operation to neutralize two “high value
targets” in Mamasapano, Maguindanao last January 25 that resulted in
the death of 44 police commandos has been assured by the military
leadership of the full cooperation of the Armed Forces of the
Philippines in its probe.
Police Director Benjamin Magalong, Director of the Criminal
Investigation and Detection Group who chairs the BOI has received the
assurance from no less than AFP Chief of Staff, General Gregorio Pio P
Catapang Jr.
Magalong acknowledged the expression of commitment by the
AFP leadership that has instructed subordinate military commanders to
cooperate in the investigation into the Mamasapano incident.
Magalong said BOI investigators have documented a total of
286 sworn statements, mostly from officers and personnel of the PNP
Special Action Force who took part in the operation to arrest suspected
terrorist Zulkifli Bin Hir alias Marwan and his Filipino henchman Basit
Usman.
The sworn statements also include those of key officers and
personnel of the AFP in Central Mindanao, and some civilian witnesses.
Magalong said the BOI expects to get the statements of at least 420 persons to complete its investigation.
The BOI is composed of Magalong as chair, with members
Police Director Catalino Rodriguez and Chief Supt Atty John Sosito; and
Operational Audit team composed of SSupt Cesar Hawthorne Binag, SSupt
Benigno Durana Jr., SSupt Robert Po, and Chief Insp David Duarte.(PNP-PIO)
