7,153 cops deployed in Metro Manila for opening of classes

MANILA, Philippines — More than 7,000 policemen will be deployed all over Metro Manila not only to hunt down criminals but also to look for explosive devices, and apprehend overloaded and “colorum” school buses to ensure the safety of students when classes resume next week.

A total of 7,153 police officers of the 29,000-strong National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) would be manning the vicinities of schools and other crime prone areas as the new school year for elementary and high school students starts on June 3, according to NCRPO chief Maj. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar.

Death penalty, health bills among priorities of senators-elect

MANILA-- The newly elected senators on Wednesday have floated the reimposition of the death penalty and some health-related legislation among their priority agenda in the Senate after the Commission on Elections (Comelec) proclaimed the 2019 midterm elections' winners in Pasay City.

While saying he is "pro-life", newly proclaimed lawmaker Ramon "Bong" Revilla said he considers supporting the bill to reinstate capital punishment.

"Pag-aralan nating mabuti 'yan. Ako, ever since naman pro-life, pero siyempre i-consider din natin kung ano 'yong epekto ng ginagawa nitong mga tao, minsan abusado talaga (I will study it carefully. Ever since I am a pro-life but of course, I have to consider also the behavior of the people, some are really abusive)," he said in an interview.

PNP says elections peaceful due to effective coordination

MANILA -- The effectie coordination with other security forces and agencies tasked to

secure the mid-term elections is the main reason for the relatively minimal incidents of poll related-violence this year, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Tuesday.

PNP chief Gen. Oscar Albayalde also attributed this to the massive preparations conducted by the PNP and its partner agencies which started in 2018.

These include police interventions and risk reductions like the implementation of search warrants and campaigns against known gun-for-hires, private armed groups.

Based on PNP records, Albayalde said they were able to arrest 5,000 suspects aside from recovering or capturing more than 5,000 weapons of various types.

Guevarra: NBI awaiting Bikoy’s formal complaint

MANILA — Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Wednesday advised Peter Joemel Advincula, alias “Bikoy”, to substantiate his claims before authorities or face the consequences of his actions.

“The NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) is waiting for Advincula/Bikoy to show up and submit his complaint with supporting evidence against the persons he implicated in the illegal drug trade. Should he fail to do so, the DOJ (Department of Justice) will consider his possible inclusion in Rodel Jayme’s inciting to sedition case or indictment for other criminal charges after proper investigation,” Guevarra told reporters.

PNP: Security preparations for May 13 polls ‘all set’

MANILA — More than a week before the campaign period wraps up, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said security measures are all set as 160,000 police personnel will be deployed for the May 13 mid-term elections.

Col. Bernard Banac, PNP spokesperson, said the police force will remain on full alert status which took effect before the beginning of the Holy Week in April.
