Duterte upset over some gov’t execs’ involvement in drug trade

MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday admitted that he was upset upon learning that many

government officials were involved in the illegal drug trade.

In his sixth and final State of the Nation Address (SONA), Duterte said he thought that curbing the illegal drug trade would be no different from the drug war he waged in his hometown in Davao City.

“When I first said I will fight drugs in six months, I thought it was like in Davao. You can either coerce, intimidate, or bribe them, or give them money,” he said.

However, he would later find out that his administration’s drug war is also being participated in by “nine generals of the Philippine National Police.”

MANILA, Philippines — The Supreme Court has ruled that President Rodrigo Duterte cannot invoke the Philippines’ withdrawal from the Rome Statute to skirt the investigation by the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) of charges that he committed crimes against humanity in the killings of thousands in his brutal war on drugs.

Voting unanimously, the 15-member tribunal also held that the President could not arbitrarily terminate international agreements without the concurrence of the Senate.

PNP to uphold data privacy in use of body cameras

MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday assured the Commission on

Human Rights (CHR) that mechanisms are in place to ensure data privacy in the use of body cameras in police operations.

“I assure the CHR that in the crafting and issuance of the Supreme Court’s guidelines on the use of body-worn cameras, data management, and privacy were given primary importance in our honorable Justices’ deliberations,” said PNP chief, Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, in a statement.

This came after the Supreme Court (SC) issued a resolution that includes rules on the use of body cameras in the execution of warrants issued by courts.

MANILA, Philippines — Lawmakers and human rights advocates on Monday opposed President Rodrigo Duterte’s bid to arm civilians to help in the government’s anticrime campaign, warning that this could lead to the emergence of more vigilante groups and a rise in criminality in the country.

Sen. Risa Hontiveros called on officials of the Philippine National Police to “think twice” over their support of the president’s plan, noting how gun-bearing police officers had been linked to the killing of innocent civilians.
