PNP 'determined' to uphold rule of law, eliminate scalawags

MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) said it is more determined to uphold the rule

of law and weed out scalawags among its ranks, its chief said on Wednesday.

PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. made this remark in response to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s second State of the Nation Address (SONA) where he vowed to support efforts to strengthen the military and police as part of efforts to uphold the rule of law.

“I think this will send a message na talagang mahirap paglaruan ang sistema (it is really hard to play with the system) and this is a call for the PNP na really to do everything professionally and what is in accordance with law ay gagawin namin (we will do). I think that is the opportunity to redeem PNP’s image we align with the President's pronouncement and we will commit na ang kanyang kapulisan ay (that his cops) something that the Filipinos can be proud of. Yun lang naman ang masasabi ko (That' all I can say) so with that, I think there is more pride in wearing the uniform now,” Acorda told reporters on the sidelines of the turnover rites of reward money to police informants in Camp Crame.

Senators: ICC has no jurisdiction over PH, justice system is fine

MANILA – Senator Francis Tolentino, chair of the Committee on Justice and Human Rights, on Tuesday evening again questioned the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC) over the Philippines.

This was after the ICC decided to push through its investigation into the killings and human rights abuses allegedly linked to former President Rodrigo Duterte's "war on drugs."

“Once again, the denial of the appeal does not grant the ICC the jurisdiction which it lacks from the very beginning," Tolentino said in his statement.

Padilla eyes Israel as model for medical marijuana use in PH

MANILA – Sen. Robinhood Padilla on Thursday said he is considering Israel as model for

allowing cannabis (marijuana) strictly for medical purposes, as well as in preventing its misuse and abuse, in the Philippines.

Speaking during the hearing of the Senate Health Subcommittee tackling Senate Bill 230 (Medical Cannabis Compassionate Access Act), Padilla said he learned more of the use of medical marijuana when he and his team visited Israel for a study tour last May 1-3.

According to the lawmaker, Israel is known to have the clearest laws and regulations on medical cannabis, as well as having the most comprehensive research on the matter.

PNP won't allow maltreatment of persons under custody

MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) does not tolerate abuse or maltreatment of

persons in its custody.

This was emphasized by PNP public information office chief Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan when asked to comment on allegations that 13 foreigners sustained injuries when they attempted to escape police custody after a raid on Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO) establishments inside a compound in Las Piñas City last week.

"The PNP does not tolerate such abuse. All possible efforts are done to ensure that persons under police custody are safe from harm or abuse," he said in a statement over the weekend.
