Crime rate lower under PBBM’s watch – Palace

MANILA – The crime rate under the watch of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is lower
despite the reported kidnapping incidents and compared to figures recorded under the past administration, Malacañang said Friday.

In an interview with dzBB, Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the crime problem in the country is being “sensationalized” because of the videos uploaded on social media.

“May mga pagkakataon na merong krimen, talagang nagaganap. Hindi perpekto ang ating mundo. Pero tandaan natin, itong kidnapping na ito, ito ay hindi masasabing isolated case pero hindi ito nagpapataas ng crime rate ng Pilipinas (There are times when crime does happen. Our world is not perfect. But remember, this kidnapping, this cannot be said to be an isolated case but it does not increase the crime rate of the Philippines),” she said.

“Itong sinasabing pagpapakalat na tumataas ang crime rate sa panahon ni Pangulong Marcos ay gawa-gawa ng troll (This alleged propaganda that the crime rate is increasing during President Marcos's time is fabricated by trolls).”

Castro advised the public not to believe what is being spread on social media platforms, cautioning against the intention to sow fear.

She said statistics would refute the alleged rise in crimes.

“Ang crime rate sa panahon ni Pangulo ay hindi ganoon kataas. Pero sinabi nga natin hindi perpekto ang pamahalaan dahil hindi maiiwasang may mga krimeng nagaganap (The crime rate during the President's time is not that high. But, as we said, the government is not perfect because it is inevitable that crimes will occur),” Castro said.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) earlier said the country’s overall crime rate declined by 26.76 percent, after recording 3,528 cases of focus crimes from Jan. 1 to Feb. 14, lower than the 4,817 cases tallied in the same period last year.

The PNP said the kidnapping cases in the country also dropped in January, following the total ban on Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGOs).

From January 2024 to February 2025, the PNP Anti-Kidnapping Group recorded 40 kidnapping cases, 10 of which involved Chinese nationals reportedly abducted by their compatriots.

The PNP said the kidnappings may have been motivated by past operations of POGOs now banned in the country. (PNA)
