NBI subpoenas VP Sara over ‘threat’ vs. PBBM

MANILA – The National Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday formally asked Vice President Sara Duterte to give her side to investigators by Friday in connection with her statement that she hired an assassin to kill President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

"Under and by virtue of the authority vested in me by Republic Act No. 10867. you are hereby commanded to be and appear in the Office of the Director, Bldg. D. 9th Floor, Filinvest Cyberzone Bay City. Diosdado Macapagal Bivd., Pasay City Philippines, at 09:00 am on the 29th day of November, 2024 then and there to give your evidence in an investigation to be held at that time and place," read the subpoena signed by NBI Director Jaime Santiago and NBI Intelligence Service Director Glenn Ricarte.

This is "to shed light on the investigation” for alleged Grave Threats under Art. 282 of the Revised Penal Code in relation to Sec. 6 of RA 10175 (Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012), and possible violation of RA 11479 (Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020)”, it added.

In a online briefing dawn of Nov. 23, Duterte said she had already tapped an assassin to kill President Marcos, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and House Speaker Martin Romualdez if she is assassinated first.

Duterte said her directive to the alleged hitman she had contracted to kill the First Couple and Romualdez is “no joke.”

The press briefing was held after the House Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability ordered the transfer of her chief of staff, Undersecretary Zuleika Lopez, from the House detention facility to the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City.

Lopez was cited in contempt on Nov. 20 over “undue interference” in the committee's probe on the Office of the Vice President’s use of confidential funds.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) fully supports the NBI in serving the subpoena to Duterte at her office in Mandaluyong City.

“The DOJ reiterates its stance that threats made by any public official, regardless of their position, will not be tolerated and must be addressed through appropriate legal channels,” it said in a statement.

“There should be no room for interpretation when it comes to statements made by public officials, their words must be interpreted in their plain and literal meaning to give paramount importance to their accountability as public servants,” it added.

The agency added that the NBI has begun conducting manhunt operations to search for the alleged assassin/s hired by the Vice President and make them accountable.

“The actions taken today strongly demonstrate the government’s dedication to ensuring that all officials operate within a framework of integrity and accountability,” the DOJ said. (PNA)
