PNP raises Undas security deployment to over 73,000 personnel

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police has increased its security deployment to 73,034 personnel, up from the initial 72,501, to secure the observance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, or Undas, as many Filipinos head to cemeteries, terminals, and home provinces.

“Security deployments for large-scale operations like Undas are continuously assessed and adjusted based on evolving ground conditions, updated crowd assessments,” PNP spokesperson Col. Allen Rae Co told Inquirer in a Viber message on Wednesday.

Co added that the PNP also modifies its deployment to local government requests for additional security personnel.

“This is standard practice to ensure that every area is adequately secured and every Filipino can observe Undas safely,” Co added.

The deployment includes 16,560 from other units such as the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Coast Guard, and other agencies.

They will be backed by 51,578 force multipliers, including barangay tanods, radio groups, and other nongovernment organizations.

The PNP also said they will be on full alert nationwide from Oct. 30 until Nov. 2

“We are reminding our mga kababayans to plan accordingly sa travel nila going to their home provinces or hometowns na medyo mabigat sigurado ito sa Oct. 30 in the afternoon,” said Co in a press briefing on Wednesday.

(“We are reminding our fellow Filipinos to plan their trips to their home provinces or hometowns accordingly, as traffic is expected to be heavy on the afternoon of Oct. 30.”)

The country’s two biggest tollway operators earlier said they are preparing for heavier traffic on major expressways during Undas, as millions of Filipinos are expected to travel to their hometowns to pay respects to departed loved ones.

SMC Infrastructure, led by Ramon Ang, expects vehicle volume across its tollway network to climb by 10%. Meanwhile, Metro Pacific Tollways Corp. (MPTC), led by Manuel Pangilinan, forecasts an overall increase of 5%. /mr
