2 policemen, 1 soldier killed in Zamboanga City shootout






Zamboanga City (CNN Philippines) — Two members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and a soldier were killed after engaging in a shootout with each other in a west coast barangay in Zamboanga City on Tuesday evening (August 18).

Police sources identified the slain policemen as PO1 Muhsin Jainul and PO3 Alkashmir Lipae, members of the Regional Public Safety Battalion based at the PNP Regional Headquarters.

The slain soldier was identified as Cpl. Jason Marqueses, a member of the Philippine Marines MBLT-9 (Marine Battalion Landing Team).

The three were reportedly killed in the shootout at the Labuan Public Market at around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. PNP and Armed Forces of the Philippines commanders rushed to the scene to diffuse the tension between the groups.

A civilian, identified as a certain Germinio Ardo, was injured during the shootout and was brought to the hospital where he is now recuperating.

Zamboanga City Police Office Chief Sr. Supt. Angelito Casimiro said that a team will be formed to conduct an investigation.  

Meanwhile, newly appointed PNP-9 Regional Director Chief Supt. Miguel Antonio ordered the withdrawal of Regional Public Safety Battalion-9 troops in the area pending investigation.
