Marcos to PNP, PDEA: Ensure integrity of drug war from ops to disposal
MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has directed the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to ensure the integrity of all anti-drug operations – from buy-busts to the proper disposal of seized narcotics – while intensifying efforts to curb the spread of illegal drugs in communities.
In a briefing in Malacañang Thursday, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the President’s directive was for authorities to intensify anti-drug efforts without compromising legality and respect for human rights.
“Kaya ang utos ng Pangulo sa PDEA at PNP, siguraduhin ang integridad ng lahat ng operasyon mula buy-bust hanggang proper disposal,” Castro said.
“Maging mas listo upang maagapan ang pagkalat ng droga sa mga komunidad; paigtingin pa ang mga operasyon nguni’t panatilihing payapa, makatao at naaayon sa batas ang laban kontra-droga (That is why the President’s order to PDEA and PNP is to ensure the integrity of all operations from buy-busts to proper disposal; to be more vigilant to prevent the spread of drugs in communities; to intensify operations but maintain a peaceful, humane, and lawful fight against drugs).”
On Wednesday, Marcos led the destruction of illegal drugs with an estimated street value of more than PHP9.4 billion at a waste management facility in Capas, Tarlac.
Included were 1,304 kg. of shabu valued at PHP8.8 billion, much of which was recovered floating in the coastal waters of Zambales, Pangasinan, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and Cagayan.
Marcos drug war by the numbers
According to the latest PDEA report submitted to the President, the government has so far seized about PHP82.58 billion worth of illegal drugs, including 11,039 kg. of shabu, between July 1, 2022 and June 25 this year.
This figure is comparable to the PHP91.06 billion worth of illegal drugs confiscated during the six-year term of former president Rodrigo Duterte, whose controversial war on drugs drew widespread condemnation due to alleged summary killings.
The PDEA data also showed that 271 drug suspects were killed in operations during the Marcos administration, a significantly lower figure compared to the 6,259 deaths recorded during Duterte’s six-year term.
To date, the government has arrested 151,867 drug personalities and rescued 2,069 minors involved in illegal drug activities. (PNA)
